The old server will be up until the 17th if you want to swap out how it feels. Use stlouis.runequake.com to access it.

Hello

The new server before going to crmod played really good for me. Is it going back? I really would like that because it's a lag nightmare for me lol, crmod lags the worst for me. The new shmack server was great and it'd be awesome if it would go back to that one. I'd be heartbroken if it didnt.. :(

So we are talking about 3 servers here..

-the old shmack... the one that been up for a long time - choppy play, inconsistent ping, disappearing traps (can't really see ice spots because they flash 1 second more or something due to lag, stepping into deathspots for the same reason), etc..

-the new shmack server - it played great out of all, with no issues (so far) - I *really* want this one back

-this (temporary) quake.crmod.com, ping jumps wildly, even doubles, unplayable really..

I have been using the same host since 2008. As of November 2014, I moved from a really old machine to a faster one but the host was exactly the same. In other words, the network was exactly the same so if you got better performance it had to be because of the new machine. However, I still received complaints that there would be lag spikes from few folks. As of September 04, 2015, I switched to an entirely new host using an even faster machine. The host I switched to was one I used to used about 8 years ago and had great results with it.

The worst case scenario is we can switch to the old one again, or find a new one, but I at least want to give it some time as it's not easy switching everything over. However, note that it just might not be possible for all players to have great ping and great connectivity, so the goal here is to satisfy most players.

ok yes the only diff is the machine.. and what a diff!

For me at least, it played nearly perfect and I did not hear any complaints - at least during the time I was on.. then on the much older machine some people were even leaving due to the lag, for me it would be choppy and turn into a slideshow, .. the choppiness would be at about even intervals within 20 seconds

Anyway, I understand your pov and didn't know this background info, so I will tell later (after some time) how the playing experience is..

Well just reporting that it plays terrible, sorry to say.. Basically ping is way higher, almost double and makes playing extremely difficult. It could be the machine, like it was mentioned before :(

I'm having no problems at all with the new server! For once I have 0 packet loss and helps me play much better. Thanks!

WELL, heck... 98 - 110 ping all afternoon/evening. I bench tested my cable and seems GREAT on my end. I re-set my modem 2x, and actually broke the reset button pushing it too hard with my leatherman (1002 uses :/ )

became an observer
