The following tweaks will need to be done to your code to increase the likelihood your server gets played ...

1. Your binds need to be the same as RuneQuake

You will need to make "rune-delete" delete a rune and "rune-tell" to show what you have and make "rune-use" switch between the runes. There are probably 100 to 150 players that play RQ/RQ+ from time to time; your mod needs to be bind compatible.

Yes, "rune-use" may not sound like the right thing to switch between runes, but supporting this will make it so no one will have to learn new binds or change their config to play your mod. Anyone who can play runes will be able to easily use your server.

2. Pacifist rune must go

Assuming you manage to get players on your server, the ability to switch between the pacifist rune and some other rune is an interest killer.

3. Change the start menu

Doing an impulse 98 to "play" is less desireable than having a player pressing 2 (impulse 2) or something that they already have bound.

Many players are not very accustomed to impulses anymore. Most servers use bind aliases.

Same goes for any other menu change that requires impulses.

4. Streamlined and smaller map rotation

At first you are certainly going to have a small number of players. When I connected to the server, the map was Palace of Hate. That map is enormous and not good for even 3 or 4 players, especially considering that there does not appear to be a hook.

I would recommend picking out some of the smaller maps with maybe 1 large map in the mix. See http://www.runecentral.com/maps

5. Get your server added to GameStatus.Net ... email jackhole@gamekeep.net and ask that your server be added.

This will increase the awareness of your server a little.

6. Announce your server on various messageboards. If no one knows, no one will play.

Some players visit here, however, you should not limit the awareness to your server to the handful of players that play here.

One place to find more places to post about your server is http://hypergate.runecentral.com/ . There are more messageboards than those listed on that site.

Good luck to your new server :)

Thanks for the feedback! I also appreciate all the time you put into the forum and community. Let me comment on some of the things you said...

1. Your binds need to be the same as RuneQuake

I didn't want to change the player's binds each time they joined the server, it semed too controling, so I assumed having the same impulses would be good, but I guess people use those aliases for their binds now.

2. Pacifist rune must go

I've always wondered about its effect in gameplay, and I thought that it taking both rune "slots" would be a good counterbalance, but reading your comment made me think, and I realize there still is too much power in it because it can be removed instantly at any time. I thought a Zen Monk (tm) that could move would be a good change, but the Pacifist is really different from the other runes.

6. Announce your server on various messageboards. If no one knows, no one will play.

I was about to announce it on the quake pub, but I thought it would be too much like spam, even though there aren't rules. Quakeboard looks like it has a more appropriate place to post about the server, though. I'm not too ready to say that the mod is in good enough condition to show it off yet... yet...

All your ideas are indeed good, so I will implement them.

Why make/continue to make a mod that will only eventually end up as a rune quake clone in the future when we already have rune quake now?

Why don't you just join the development team and merge any new ideas you may have with the solid foundation that rod and now slot have already built?

Your post is odd, since it challenges me.

At first I thought it was just an attack, but you don't seem to do that sort of thing. Perhaps you're helping me get some energy into doing something different, since that seems to be the effect. Or, maybe you want to add to your massive Quake folder *wink* I know now that the runes should not be my main focus. Let's see what I can do.

While I was typing that, in the back of my mind I was thinking, why ask him to do anything different than what he is doing? Maybe he likes doing what he is doing.

But at the same time I had to be honest with you and give you my opinion. Actually it is based on advice that Rod gave to me when I first started the Runebot idea.

Hope I didn't sound insulting as that was not my intention.
