Tonight I saw 12 on Shmack and 12 on SINGED at the same time. Been a while since we've seen 24 Rune players going at it at the same time. :D

Um, quake is dead.

Since 2001 quake has been losing players.
Dm players left for Ut2k2
CA players left for Counterstrike

CTF players tried to hag one but left because of REAL-LIFE(tm)

and well runequakers just remained to get the last word in...

We've had a forum for over 5 years :D

Slot Zero set up Rune Central forums back in the days when forums were not easy to setup.

As a result, the RQ players communicate, know where to check in, and get help considering Quake has a lot of different kinds of problems. I know at Singed, it seems like I help at least 6 players a month with some sort of game threatening problem. So, we can still have hundreds of players a week.

Plus Slot Zero and Diazoild both have their site addresses as a non-participating QShmack player aka RuneQuake.com and Singed.Net so there is a near 100% awareness of the forums.

It's not because Quake is old, there is a Doom II forum with 25000 posts in just a single sub forum. It is because Quake 1 lacks a mega-site dedicated solely to the game. I've read some of the most terrible clueless advice in the PlanetQuake forums, for example.

RuneQuake isn't still going strong by luck :) The community is highly organized.

And, while this probably doesn't count, by there is also a very strong Quake single player community because they are also highly organized as well. (SDA, the mappers, etc.)

And of course, Quakeworld -- which is still going strong, although struggling to deal with what is effectively a "Quake suicide attempt" where the all-important Quakeworld.nu went down and with it like 10 critically important sites and it's been down for several months now.

You just go ahead and keep ducking me Toyo! Haahahaaaaa!!

BTW DZ, you got that Quake Marine guy still botting on Singed. Its like some kind of crazy defective bot though. Tonight he was going by the name of OTTO_PLAYA.

That is a server bot (his IP is 64.81...) since things have been slow lately I put him back on for a while.

There are a few people that ask for him in a pretty clever way. They changed their names to Where's Otto and Can Otto play.

I always get mixed reactions from people ... some like server bots because they have a place to practice in the middle of the night when no one is around. I think one of these folks is in the UK. Others complain that he gets in they way ...

The admins have the discretion to kick the bot whenever they desire.

I just don't particularly like *that* server bot. All it does is stand around and unload all its shotgun shells into everyone in sight. So on e1m7 for example if you are out in the open your health is constantly being drained. How come you don't run a runebot, dz?

Those bots don't show up in the server browser as they are part of the code. Therefore, they are not very good at drawing traffic to the server.

There was also an issue with the code ... if you remove and add them back into the game too frequently (via impulses) it crashes the server.

Yes I'm probably the 'guy from England' DZ's refereing to :o) It may well be down to the time diff, but when I tend to visit Singed there is often no one else there and rather than go to shmack and experience the various 'commentaries/dialogues' it can be handy to practice, even with my ping, against a bot. IMHO the ideal solution would be for the server to be able to sense when there are 2 or more 'real' players and turn the bots off so you don't get any interference from the bot. When the usage falls below that level the bots could be reactivated. Perhaps the ability the vote them on/off would be another useful feature. Apart from IEEE does anyone still develop RQ?

However, this may all be academic now as singed seems to have disappeared. eeek! Come back DZ!

Kind regards

Monty

Hehe, I've noticed the "commentaries/dialogues" haven't been so bad lately. I have to admit a few times last year, I got rather irritated with those (i.e., the guy who insists on everyone you are "cheating", the player who insults everyone and demands you play him CA, etc.)

I'd like to think that means people care about and enjoy the game.

I've tried several of the newer games and I really don't like it. Too many things going on! A shoot-em-up game should be simple and to the point! Get ammo, run around in circles and fire until you kill or get killed. That's it. You don't need heavy graphics and whooping sound effects in a shoot-em-up game. Quake 1 will always be my favorite because of the simple and straight forward way of playing, and I'm sure this applies for a lot of other gamers as well. If you'd rather play CS then by all means go for it, just leave me the hell alone!
