i saw some comment on the home page about proquake for linux. where can i find that? assumedly i wouldn't need the full registered version in order to use it, seeing as they never made one for linux......

This is Magnesium's signed GL ProQuake 3.20 for Linux.

I have just about zero Linux experience except from the command line remotely with SSH/Telnet so I couldn't tell you the first thing about it. (Because I just can't risk formatting/repartitioning my hard drive, maybe someday and those boot from CD Linuxes aren't good for much).

Considering this is ProQuake 3.20 and not 3.50, I have no idea how well/crappy it will work behind a router. ProQuake 3.40 is the first ProQuake with the router fix code so ...

The sure bet ProQuake 3.50 is available for Linux, but it's the WinQuake type only

And finally, if you are using GL with Linux behind a router you might consider JoeQuake 0.15, but I believe you have to compile it yourself and you'd have to ask that in the JoeQuake forum but I'm thinking this would require a lot of libraries so beware.

Yes, you will need the pak files in quake/id1 ... pak0.pak and pak1.pak and this doesn't come with the downloads. They would be the same exact files as the Windows ones.

And this is the limit of my knowledge on the above combination of topics. Someone else here would have to answer any questions beyond this, but there are more than a few Linux users around here.

(By the way, there is no such thing as registered versus non-registered Quake executables. They are identical. The difference between shareware Quake and registered Quake is that shareware Quake only has pak0.pak and registered has pak0.pak and pak1.pak Pak 0 has all the maps and monsters that appear in maps START + E1M1 thru E1M8. Pak1 has all the rest of the maps)

I think the registry in the engines are alittle different as well. I remember trying to mix pak1 with pak0 for shareware and it just gave me a complaint. I may have screwed up with something though. :P

You can always build the latest Linux ProQuake from the source yourself it just won't be able to play on cheat free servers but should work fine otherwise.

baker yer an encyclopedia man...... unfortunately i have no idea how to compile something myself in linux, nor do much else besides the basics! its still a pretty frustrating system to me! thanks guys!

What version are you looking for? GL or X windows (like winquake)? Sqpro is the DOS command prompt equivalent which runs in console mode. I will compile the binaries from the Proquake 3.5 source and post links to them here. I'll try to get to it before the weekend is over. The big thing that got me involved with Linux was when I found out I could run Quake on it and then I found out it was a great OS too:) I was getting pretty annoyed everytime Windows would somehow always manage to lock up solid after I hit 49 frags during a game.

jeez magnesium, thanks a lot bro!!! i just started last week meself! its nice, but i still have much to learn. it seems like its pretty essential to know how to compile programs from source code? i havent even scratched that area, though did have some fun wtith some command line projects from a book today :) wow, thanks--quake on linux, thatd be groovy! oh btw i tried normal winquake with wine, it didnt work :(

OK here's the files for the GL and X windows version of ProQuake 3.5. Of course these are not signed by the author so they won't work on a ProQuake server with the cheat free turned on. I didn't really get to test them other than a quick start and shutdown but they seemed to run fine. http://fbody.kicks-ass.net:8000/pq3.5-glquake.glx

Just put these in your Quake folder like Baker mentioned and put your pak files in the id1 folder and just run the program from X windows.
What distro are you running? If your running a recent Linux distro you probably won't need to compile anything unless you are doing something a little unusual or cutting edge. Most things you need you will probably find precompiled packages for.
I have used Wine alot. It's not perfect but I managed to run Soilder of Fortune 2, Call of Duty and a few other games and Windows programs. There is another version of Wine called Winex at transgaming.org which for 5 bucks a month you get tech support and free updates. It has a lot more Direct X compatability builtin. They have a free version also but that you have to compile yourself, it runs tons of games. Let me know if you need help getting Quake going.

okay Magnesium dood, I put those files in my quake folder and tried to execute the pq3.5-quake.x11 one and i got the message:
Couldn't display "/home/spook/quake/pq3.5-quake.x11".

what do I do man? oh btw don't worry about gl, i just use normal, and run FC4 if it helps. thanks man!

It sounds like Fedora is trying to display the file as a text file.

Ok move to the quake directory:
cd /home/spook/quake

Might want to make sure the permissions are correct:
chmod 755 pq3.5-quake.x11

Then try running it by typing this:
./pq3.5-quake.x11

If that works then you set the game window size with:
./pq3.5-quake.x11 -width 800 -height 600 (or whatever your screen res is)
I just remebered that there isn't a fullscreen mode with this though it may work fine set at your screen res and maybe maximize the window too. I think that is what I did the few times that I used proquake in Linux. I usually use another client called Quakeforge when I play. I'll have to give JoeQuake a try one of these days too.
Let me know how that goes.

okay magnesium, bro, my linux box just crashed yesterday so i ripped it apart with a hammer. it was only a 500 mhz laptop--didnt want to risk my main system with linux my first time. but i think a new system is headed my way for christmas so ill have an extra to do linux on--guess ill get in touch with ya then. thanks for the help man!!!

That was kind of an extreme solution to the problem. My main computer is my 400mhz laptop, my server is 350mhz, 500mhz can't be that bad.

Compiling the source didn't help? I can post the diff for my Makefile maybe that would make a difference? Though I didn't change much.

I can get the quake source onto /usr/local/games/quake just fine. I can even compile the code into it. My problem is that proquake or glquake don't run. There must be something I have to edit in another directory for it to know that pq is an executable.

chmod +x <filename>
that will make it executable if it isn't already. Which if you compiled the source and it compiled ok then it should be executable already.
