yes Joequake is an all round engine which has lot of good features and nearly everyone uses it.
Darkplaces and Tenebrae have better eye candy and looks but they don't support stuff like joequake does such as: charsets, demo features, support for models and other stuff.
And Joequake is more user freindly i mean if you just get darkplaces you need to bloody download extras you want such as: textures, models, boxsets. And then convert them to a format that darkplaces understands!
So anyway Joequake is No.1 cause it's the most easy to set up and user friendly
