One feature of ProQuake/XQuake that I miss in JoeQuake is the allowance of longer messages. The following is from the ProQuake features list: Longer mm1/mm2 messages In standard Quake you can only type 31 characters in messagemode 1 or 2. In ProQuake you can type 44 characters in messagemode 1 and 42 in messagemode 2 (these are the maximum lengths that guarantee the message won't get cut off by standard quake servers).
