Hello again RuneQuakers :)
As you may or may not be aware, there has been some talk between a few people behind the scenes about whether anyone would be interested in playing in a possible friendly online RuneQuake Tournament. Details are still very hazy at the moment and just to be clear nothing whatsoever has been decided, but if enough people want to play, it would probably take a very similar format to the successful FFA tournaments (details of which can be seen at http://bigfoot.quake1.net). As very few people have admin control on Shmack it may be preferable that an alternative server such as NewYork would be selected to ensure that experienced admins can make sure that everything goes smoothly.

The question is of course, who would be interested in playing such an event went ahead? As I had offered to canvass opinions I posed the question on Shmack the other night and at least a couple of people were up for the challenge. If anyone else would be interested please let me know and I'll pass that on.

Kind regards and keep fragging :)

Monty

I'll play as long as Polarite isn't there... I kid, I kid.

What does an admin need to do on a server?

Hi Zop,
Nice to talk to you again. Knowing Pol I'm affraid that's highly likely. As a top tip, whenever I play against Pol I usually come prepared with my extra brown safety pants :D

As far as the "admining" goes I would expect that its a case of making sure that the agreed set of maps are selected at the end of each round, making sure one of us cams the event, and so forth.

Kind regards

Monty

My thanks to those that responded, either here or online at Shmack, I've passed the details on and will let you know if anything comes of it.

Kind regards

Monty

Can I please do 1v1 vs Royal?
Cheers.

EEEEk, it's Dee!! :)
Hi Dee,
Unfortunately the response was a bit underwhelming and so it was decided to put it on hold for a while. I'm sure the regular FFA tourneys will go ahead, I suspect FFA10 is in the offing. It's a pity really as they wanted to try and vary the tourneys a bit with something different (RuneQuake). Thank you (and EZ) for your support though, and we'll see what the future holds.

Kind regards

Monty

Hi Killa,

I think the idea was to have a RuneQuake version of the FFA tourneys. So if I have understood it correctly, there would be 4 x 20 minute rounds on selected maps (probably custom maps to keep it fresh and even things up). To make it fairer to a global audience it would probably have been split between the New York (newyork.servequake.com) and Damage (damage.servequake.com) servers so everyone gets a chance at being Mr LPB. If you take a look at some of the recent events they tend to get a minimum of 10 players, but unfortunately we only had responses from 4 Runequakers (including you :) ). I understand completely as tournaments are not to everyone's taste but it's a pity as it would have been quite spectacular with players like Dee, EZ, Polarite, etc, and of course yourself.

We haven't ruled it out for the future, it just depends on if there's some support from the players for it. I'm usually floating around one of the Shmack/Damage/New York servers so if I hear anything further I will let you know.

Kind regards

Monty

Woot!. the signup sheet currently looks as follows:

Zop
EZJack,
Dee Killah,
Mindz,
Killa.
Sole,
Fragbait,
And of course... the mighty Hydro! :)
I'm sure Pol (all hail) and Peg will come along to help out/play/steal the MH and so forth :).

Ok let me go tell who I need to tell and we'll try and get this organised. I'll come back to you with more details but there are just a few things to note:

1. Normally these rounds are played on 4-6 well known custom maps (e.g. aero, cleaver, bless, could, etc) which are published and made available via download (if anyone is missing them) prior to the event.

2. The previous FFA tourneys have been held at Bigfoot and New York to give everyone a far crack at being Mr LPB, At the moment the response has been mainly US based so it is likely to be a New York (FFANY) only tourney.

3. Given the differing timezones it tends to be held around 9pm GMT.

4. The whole point of the FFA tourneys is to play a few friendly, fun, good natured games of Quake and let ppl see that it doesn't have to be a magnet for trolls and abusive behaviour.

Kind regards

Monty

This is going to be a tough group! BTW its Killa instead of Killer and Dee Killah instead of Dee Killer.

Dee always gives me a tough match and usually beats me up pretty bad! Had a bad match last night on DM4-- I started at 8 when he came in then he beat me by 10 at the end!

Haven't been on my game lately for some reason-- but still fun!

The map you mentioned, Monty, called "could"... is it just could.bsp? I have one with that name, but it seems to be a single-player only map.

Hi Zop,
You are right, "Could" appears to be a SP map, but fortunately it was just an example :)
I'm putting together a list of some examples of small (clicky) and medium (clicky) sized maps that could be used so at least people can familiarize themselves with them and download it if necessary.

Kind regards
Monty

I know I don't show my face around here much these years, but I would love to participate in something like this. I participated in DFG's tournament a long time ago.

Welcome aboard, I'll add you to the signup list. I think Mindzy may have played in that tournament so you will be in familiar company. :)

Please note that The following may change
, but at present we intend to temporarily use a port from the New York Server (newyork.servequake.com) for the tourney, and to make things a little more challenging will play on 4 rounds on custom maps. The maps will be announced shortly aand downloads provided.
We will try and make the settings mirror Shmack if at all possible so it should feel familiar to most. I will be trying to set up the tourney server for testing in the next day or so, real life permitting, and will then try to tweak it so it's as optimal as I can make it bearing in mind I'm no Quake expert, then I'll hand it over to much more learned ppl than I such as Peg and the mighty Polarite :)
@Slot: if you have any suggestions here please feel free to email me.
Why are we not holding it on Shmack? Well the main reasons for me are that numerous people have commented on the lag with just a few players on it over the last 18 months and also that Shmack currently has a habit of emptying as soon as someone starts to dominate the server. Hopefully New York on Tourney night may be different.

More info to follow shortly.

Kind regards

Monty
