Use the command vote-arena to change the current mode of the server to Rocket Arena. You don't need the Rocket Arena maps to play, but it's a heck of a lot more fun with them.

For the moment, the custom maps server is setup to cycle through the 47 arena maps and always default to arena mode. The custom command will list all of the map names you can vote on, or simply type vote-exit to access a random one.

You can download the rocket arena maps from,

http://runequake.com/maps/ramaps.zip

They're also available as individual zip files, along with the standard custom maps, in the quake maps section of the FTP,

ftp://ftp.runequake.com/quake/maps/

Extract the maps to quake/id1/maps and connect to

quake.shmack.net:26001

For the most part, this mode was intended to be played without runes, hook, and alternate weapons. They are all off by default but can be voted on if you wish (expect bugs!).

To join the game, press 2 like you normally would and this will put you in the queue. You can exit the queue by pressing 2 again.

Please post your comments and bug reports here. This mode is in the beta stage of development.

Couple of changes:

* There were instances when you would spawn (as a player) in the spectator area instead of arena. This is fixed.

* You remain dead longer when you type "kill" to allow you to close the console and press "4" to become an observer.

* The linear map rotation now follows the standard RA rotation. Server is currently in random rotation.

* Spawn spots now push you forward as if you were coming out of a teleporter.

* The button on xarena3 (X Arena) was removed because it creates packet overflow.

* Practice mode is now compatible Arena Mode. There is currently no way to turn either off without voting both off (vote-normal), but I will address that.

Several of us were playing at the RA server last night and I have a little feedback for you.

First, the draw (tie) feature is very cool! It is nice to get a shot off "at the buzzer" when you die and have it kill your enemy.

Second, there seems to be a problem with vote-exit, possibly other votes as well. You can't initiate a vote-exit unless you are actually in the arena as a player, which can be pretty inconvenient since you are there to play.

Last, one of the things I really miss is the audible "3, 2, 1" countdown. Now I realize that the sounds aren't there so that it can be played without a download, or at least by just downloading the maps. However, can I suggest putting a tick (or some other sound effect from the original paks) for the countdown? The timing of getting the first shot off in RA is critical, and all seemed to agree last night that the auditory cue for doing so was sorely missed.

Maybe a single impulse devoted to joining and removing yourself from the queue position? Impulse 70 would be easy to remember because that's RA's impulse to get out of line, if it's convenient.

I now allow players waiting in line to vote.

I reinstated the custom-sounds command. You can use the standard arena packfile or download the sounds from,

http://www.runequake.com/maps/rasounds.zip

Extract these wave files into quake/id1/sound/ra and type custom-sounds when you connect to server.

In the event you don't want to use the custom sounds, I will have the original packfile sounds setup by default. Typing custom-sounds will allow you to toggle. This feature is still in development.

Thanks for the feedback. Please let me know how you like the changes.

I'm still working on a solution for this. I'll keep you informed when I come up with something.

Thanks,

Pressing "2" as an observer will toggle your position in and out of queue (line). I'm still not pleased with this, but it works.

Hmm, you can vote for some things, but I couldn't seem to vote maps (ex. <mapname>). I think you could vote-exit though?

The yes/no wasn't working but it has since been fixed as of 1.0.95. All of the vote commands work off the same routine, so it shouldn't matter what type it is. I really didn't give the changes a proper workout so I'll do that tonight.

Funk, glad you like the default sounds.. although when I first start playing I look around to see who the hell has divine wind.

Update: Test complete and a new version was uploaded (0.96).

gg's to all who played today, was fun :). Oh was wondering if its possible to add a accuraccy feature much like those in cr/ca, gives weapon efficiency. also maybe in draw situations the 2 guys respawning with say 100h or 50h maybe would be more interesting, kind of like a sudden death. other than that dope server my man :D

Smokey is trying to rig the system the way Toyo_MR2 tries to get runes removed from the mod when he has a bad game. :P

:o...oh man shit hit the fan last night on the server....we put it from arena mode to prac mode...then prac mode to normal mode...so we were all spawning in the obs rooms and fighting with the runes and boomsticks lol.....THEN we changed it from normap mode back to prac mode and we were still fighting in the obs rooms but with all weapons and runes....it was insanity lol.

I made screenshots. Small room, multiple angry shamblers, 6 players, radiation, a grav well or 2. Craziest Quake game I've ever been in.

The arena maps weren't designed to be played in normal mode and currently there isn't a way to turn off practice mode (or arena mode) without first going into normal mode. In the event someone leaves in a particular mode, the server automatically resets itself to the default mode (default is arena on 26001) when everyone leaves.

Also, I think if you lower the health/armor or give quad it increases the chance of another draw. I'm glad you're enjoying the server though. :)
