 Post subject: Trouble Connecting

Help please. I have been playing on the server Rune Quake (quake.shmack.net) for a number of years. But about two weeks ago I suddenly could no longer get into a game. Quake would tell me that I am connected but would just show the console prompt as in "]". This is very frusting. I fooled around with it, even trying to get in using the multiplay option without going through Gamespy. I suspect it might have something to do with all these Windows XP security updates that get installed automatically. Any idea? Thanks.

After connecting, try typing "ping" at the Quake prompt.

Your problem may or may not be Windows XP.

Do you have a router or dsl/cable modem with router capabilities? If you do have a router, probably your best solution is ProQuake ( http://www.planetquake.com/proquake ) which had some router friendly programming added to it in one of the last versions.

Thanks Toyo and Baker for your quick response. Here is the setup for my quake:
1. I use Winquake.
2. I use a trial(free) version of GameSpy
3. I have applied all the patches 1.0 through 1.8 (I think) from ID software
3. The only firewall I know that is running is the Windows XP firewall and there is always some update. Though I don't what the company has running.
4. ISP. I play Quake at the office and I think we have T1.
5. I also want to add that when I try to connect, I would get something like:
Connection accepted
3 demo(s) in loop


Hope this is the information you ask Baker. I will try proquake. Thanks again. A life without Quake is tough even though I almost always lose to Toyo.

Try the ProQuake and let's hope that fixes it. If that doesn't work, try turning off the Windows Firewall. If neither work, post back here.

Baker,
Tried proquake and the same thing happened, i.e., I still get the ] prompt and right before that it says connected.
I also turned off the firewall but that didnt' help either.
Any thought?

1. Start ProQuake and try to connect to XOC.IHOC.NET

That server is a test server with a custom server built to work around the problem.

Let me know if you are able to connect to that server.

2. If not, you may have 2 network connections.

Something to try is find your ip address by going to

http://www.whatismyip.com/

3. After you obtain your IP address, start ProQuake as follows:

c:\quake\wqpro -ip 111.222.333.444

This will force your network connection to use your internet IP

4. If #3 fails, at a minimum post your IP address here (I want to ensure it is a valid one, not a LAN IP like 192.168.1.1 or 127.0.0.1 or 10.x.x.x

I really appreciate your doing this for me.

1. I can connect to XOC.IHOC.NET!
2. I tried
c:\quake\wqpro -ip 111.222.333.444
with my ip address but it still does not work.
3. I will send my ip address to you.

Good. This means that at least we have some clues to what the problem is. You are not the only person with this problem. My WinQuake.exe cannot connect at all to any server except xoc.ihoc.net .

Your ProQuake may not be receiving in-bound communication from the server due to something Yugo2Heck said about ports and how Quake works. It is my understanding (I could be wrong) that the inbound Quake traffic from the server doesn't or doesn't always use port 26000 (but this is beyond my level of understanding).

I am not technically literate about the inner workings of Quake or network communications. It's all greek to me.

It is my understanding that Slot Zero made some changes to the ProQuake server code (like adding the lag command), perhaps he is open to considering incorporating whatever fix was coded for the xoc server.

I don't know why I didn't try this but IT WORKS! Toyo, I promise the next 3 times we meet on Rune Quake (quake.shmack.net) I won't shoot back :wink: .

1. Have you tried with ProQuake to connect to quake.ihoc.net:26000?

Are you able to connect to that server?

2. If so, try to connect to Quake.Shmack.Net:26000

When it is trying to connect, type PING in the console.

Does it connect?

Just Figured it out, it was my Modem's Ip that i needed, not my Nic's IP

I works now
