My 9 year old son loves to play quake, but I can't let him play on shmack because of the bad language. What about a new server instance with chat and name filters? I think they call them "Christian" servers.

Try using this command: con_notiftytime 0

And unbind the ~ key. Now he can't see exactly what's said in the console.

Out of sight, out of mind?

There's always a way to replace keywords with gibberish. Bnet does that. This is something you should discuss with the server admins

I would suggest con_notifytime -5 ... when making movies using "0", I have seen some text sneak on to the screen somehow.

This is something Chuck brought to my attention a long time ago.

Keep in mind that your child maybe exposed to offensive character names.

You might consider installing a practice bot. If he's very young, he may never know the difference.

Shmack has a liberal policy when it comes to both text and names. If you are offended by a vulgar player, let that person know. If that doesn't alleviate the problem (yes, it probably won't help), take a snap shot and email it to Slot Zero.

most practice bots that have chat with them, have curse words in the chat lines... you can edit some of the bots's chat lines however

Then again this is a game about killing... should he even be playing Quake at his age?

Here's the easiest solution. 1-player.

I agree more with that then the rest of the posts.. If anyone is worried about offensive language then why even let them play a game where you're running around killing others? Food for thought?

Quake isn't that bloody at all, the only thing that makes it rated M is the gore... Theres a command you can use to turn off the gibs and blood... The original doom games are more violent, IMO...

I was around 13 when I first played Quake. Back then the graphics were awesome but what got my attention the most was the sounds. Without the sounds, I probably would have stopped playing quake.

I think a bad language filter should be applied by the client. This way the parent has complete control over what words are being filtered.
